Dr. Elizabeth Chandra (Ph.D. in Southeast Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley)

Topic: Women's Writings in Colonial Indonesia
By focusing on the first generation of female novelists in colonial Indonesia, Dr. Chandra will explain how women of this generation used the novel form and the romance genre in particular, to interrogate not only conventional gender roles, but also the patriarchy of the Chinese filial piety and the prejudice of colonial modernity.

Dr. Nobuto Yamamoto (Ph.D. in Government, Cornell University)

Topic: A New Age of "Freedom" in Southeast Asia
The idea of free market takes hold in the field of economic activity, while the sense of freedom of expression prevails among citizens in the era of the Internet and smart phones. Meanwhile, shifting liberal ideas shapes new social norms from free speech to fighting against hate speech. As a new sense of freedom appears to have taken roots in individual countries and citizens in Southeast Asia, Dr. Yamamoto will discuss how the state and even private social media companies play a major role in shaping the regulations and exercising regulations.
